There are more than five life zones in New Mexico and this makes the wildlife diverse. The area has a wilderness region that is home to mountain lions, black bears, snowshoe hares and Rocky Mountain elk. There are more than 140 bird species but this usually varies depending on the season you visit the area. New Mexico’s wilderness also has green snakes, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, waterfowl and many-lined shinks. It is also a great place to see wild turkeys, squirrels, mule deer, and bighorn sheep.

The Zuni Mountains in New Mexico are home to the Albert squirrels and elk. To see peregrine falcons, burrowing owl, bobcat and prairie dogs, visitors can go up to the National Conservation Area.

New Mexico also has prairies and grasslands that provide good habitats for various waterfowl species. You will also see bald eagles, snow and Canadian geese and sand-hill cranes in this part of New Mexico. To see a wide variety of lizards and rattlesnakes, you can visit Granite Gap in the area.
